About Shasta McBrideI grew up on Kauai in a family of artists, teachers, mathematicians, and spiritualists surrounded by incredible natural beauty and power in the mountains, the ocean, and the people.
I remember my mother taking me under a waterfall to a secret chamber in a hidden valley when I was five, and telling me we had gone to Narnia. Growing up, everything had this quality: magic, happiness, and the sacred. In the water, surfing or scuba diving, I wanted to fuse with everything and started writing stories about what I saw.
I studied English Literature and Creative Writing at Lewis & Clark College and later at UCLA’s Extension Programs and other classes. I’ve worked with writers Annie Dawid, Vern Rutsala, Mark Haskell Smith, Eduardo Santiago, Susan Wyler, Lisa Cron, and Melanie Thorne.
Night Surfing is my debut literary novel, begun in 2009. It’s been quite a journey to write this story from the heart, and I’m thankful to complete it in 2026.
